Project Pre-Planning Save Money by Improving Efficiency
How much time do you spend during a normal construction day on actual installation? If you’re like most subcontractors, you probably spend more than 35 percent of your day on areas other than installation. Large chunks of time are devoted to myriad tasks, such as moving around the jobsite, studying the plans, and laying out the work, to name a few. While these non-installation duties are generally spread out somewhat evenly over the duration of a typical project, have you considered what type of difference you’d see if you changed the way you handled some of these tasks? What if you could shift them to the front of the project, to the “Pre-Planning” stage?
D. Brown Management’s Profit Happens Here! Training Module, Project Pre-Planning takes you through this what-if scenario step-by-step, and focuses on how to pre-plan projects and improve efficiency for a subcontractor. One of the first steps to pre-planning is to understand what problems cost. Every construction project will have problems, it comes part and parcel with the business. However, have you ever thought about what these problems cost and how the timing of those problems affects that cost?
Most construction problems are not usually recognized until you are right in the middle of them. At this point, your problem is going to cost you about 30 percent to fix – so if the current project is worth $1,000, the problem will cost you about $1,300 before you are done. If you don’t discover the problem until after the work is complete, it will cost you up to 80 percent to fix it. However, if you were able to find this problem ahead of time, it would only cost you about 10%. Focusing on what we can do before there’s a problem will save time, money, and stress.
This module breaks down a typical construction day, and we show you where your time is currently spent, and how it can be better spent. Everything from studying plans, to material procurement, to mobilization, all the way up to actual installation and beyond, we detail where you’re losing time and money, and then we show you how you can get it back. A small company with fifteen field employees can add $75,000 to the bottom-line just by decreasing non-installation activities by a few minutes each day!
Sounds great, right? It is! But, pre-planning requires a complete shift of focus for an organization, which is not an easy task to undertake. The Project Pre-Planning Training Module will give you the tools you need to begin this process of change within your organization. We’ll show you how to excite the enthusiasts and visionaries around you, but we’ll also share with you methods to bring the pragmatists, conservatives, and skeptics over to your side. The ability to accept and embrace change is critical in creating the “Project Pre-Planning” necessary to bring about the efficiency and savings in time and money you want within your organization. We’ll show you how.

The Toyota Way is my favorite book for 2006. It had so many good ideas that I could not keep up and ended up reading it again and even buying the Field Book to go along with it.
