About

D. Brown Management specializes in working with the management teams of growing contractors helping put the processes, systems, training and other business infrastructure in place required to support the growth profitably.

The services provided range from handling that special project that you simply don't have in-house resources for to working with your team to develop and document a strategic plan for the company to customized structured programs such as the Rapid Construction Company Analysis (RCCA) or Construction Company Development (CCD). I am so confident that the services provided will provide a measurable benefit to your company that many of the services are performed on either a lump-sum or contingency basis with delayed payment options until you financially realize the results.

My basic philosophy is simple -

"If I can't deliver results that impact your bottom line then why should you pay?"

Before you hire anyone either as a consultant or an employee you should ask yourself this simple question. A lot of people promise a lot but when it comes down to it as the company owner you are the only one taking on any risk.

I describe my approach in more detail in the About David / Approach section but in general my approach can be described as a hands-on consultant who is results oriented. I am very selective about the clients and projects I take on and will only take on projects or engage in long-term company development programs if there is a very high chance of success.

Getting Results

The key to getting good results in business is to have the right people with the right skills focused and working on the right things.

Sounds simple but anyone who has tried to do this knows that it is much easier said than done.

My goal in putting together all the information in this section was to help you understand what my skills, personality and approach to problems are and help you evaluate the impact we could have on your company by working together.

Key Personality Traits & Experience Overview

Passion: First and foremost I love what I do. I love the construction industry and I love helping people excel. This has driven me to constantly look for better ways of doing things and to constantly learn more about every aspect of the industry. This passion and drive comes across in everything I do and is contagious; Whether it's a marketing project, dealing with the media, training employees, facilitating a strategy meeting or motivating people to do the seemingly impossible in a turnaround situation.

Diverse Skills & Experience: At Microsoft they have a philosophy that you cannot be a manager unless you can do the jobs of everyone you supervise. I strongly believe in this philosophy and have worked hard to develop with that goal in mind. I have always strived to have a balance of strong, detailed technical skills along with a broader big-picture focus. I've also worked hard and made many lateral moves in my career to strengthen my technical skills in many areas ranging from the field to IT to financial to project management and estimating. Having all the technical skills of a specialist along with the big picture strategic and financial focus allows for rapid assessment, troubleshooting and implementation.

Rapid Learning Curve: Experience and skills can only take you so far. To really excel you need to have the experience and also the ability to learn very quickly in new situations. Success and process improvement comes from being able to take historical experiences and merge them with new inputs to create a new and unique situation. I strive to constantly learn new things which keeps my mind open and in-shape. My learning curve has proved valuable and exceptional in all areas; especially areas related to business and construction.

General Personality: While appearing brash or impatient at times my personality is generally outgoing and likable with the ability to quickly gain trust and instill confidence. I'm also a firm believer in communication through a variety of mediums from written direction to group training sessions to one-on-one meetings. This is an invaluable trait for troubleshooting or implementing any system.

Drive & Work Tolerance: This is what really ties everything together. None of the above traits are valuable without the drive to actually get something done and a high tolerance for the amount of work required to get it done. Working in turnaround situations, fast-track projects, airports, highway construction and emergency contracts has honed and proven that drive and tolerance for work. In a turnaround situation I can often start on a Friday night with very little and have a workable plan that can be clearly communicated by the following Monday morning. Airports, highways and emergency contracts often require work days in excess of 40 hours at a stretch. I've worked hard to maintain the mental and physical shape required for this type of work.

Approach To Solutions: It is very important for people working together to share the same vision, ethics and general approach. I take a very holistic approach focusing on both the big-picture view as well as the detailed, ground-level view. I believe that the solution mostly lies within the people that are currently in-place and that it is usually communicating the details of the big-picture goal and how everyone's detailed skills fit into achieving that goal.

Résumé: General summary of skills and experiences with downloadable/printable copy as well as enhanced web version.

Projects & Portfolio: A summary of specific projects and achievements with performance timelines and details. Look through these to get a good idea about the diversity of experience I bring to the table. Like the résumé section the web page is extended and enhanced with a printable summary.

Speaking Engagements: Provides a summary of recent public speaking. This is a great way to generate buzz about a company.

Press: Summary of press and media coverage. I have always been good at generating press starting with my personal training business and for most projects I've done. Your company probably has quite a few things to brag about and you should consider developing the relationships with reporters and the media to take advantage of that. I enjoy working press and speaking engagements into an overall marketing plan.
